Tuna Boats and Catapillars

On the Eve of my 27th Birthday ( yes Mom, I'm turning 27 not 26 as you originally thought), my wonderful husband surprised me with an extremely cool birthday present.....

A sushi making class!

How neat!  How tasty!  How necessary!  Ben and I tried to make sushi once, and it went terribly awry.  It was just a bland ball of mush in our mouths.  Quite possibly the worst sushi I had ever eaten.

No fear friends, for this evening I learned the techniques for creating the perfect sushi rice and a few sushi roll techniques.  There were three other couples there, so it was fun to see everyone's sushi work.

Ben warned me when we came into the class that his sushi would be much like his art in third grade.  He wasn't kidding.  Our instructor thought it was really strange when he turned his first shrimp finger roll into a catapillar (using carrot sticks as antenna of course).  Apparently that was the first time that anyone had ever made an animal out of sushi materials in the history of her course.

We also learned how to make "battleship" sushi....a ship shaped roll with the perfect zen balance of rice and mirin soaked tuna.   In Asian culture, balance is the key to exquisite food.  The fish should never over power the rice and vice versa.  It should be a beautiful blend of each.   All the other couples created delicate samplings and won great praise from the instructor.  Apparently mine was more of a giant tuna boat.... .The fish won in that zen battle folks.   Battleship sunk.

So you could say that Ben and I certainly made our impression on the class.  However, we pulled it together and really stepped up to our Top Chef potential  The evening ended with everyone gathering around the table with great beer and wine to feast on our tasty trials.  Take a look!

Yes, we made all of that deliciousness!

It was a great birthday surprise.  Thanks Benny :)

Ringing In the New Year

A night out in classic Baltimore with a few great friends.  Welcome, 2011.

Blurry, but cute.
